The Parliament of Catalonia

Campaign for internationalization of Catalan institutions: Parliament

In line with the internationalisation of the situation in Catalonia which we have so far carried out for over 3 years, Help Catalonia has launched a new campaign to publicise our institution

The first focuses on the Parliament of Catalonia. Help Catalonia first contacted the members of the Presiding Committee of the Parliament to ask them to talk about the institution they represent to the international community. Those who accepted were the President Ms. Núria de Gispert (CiU), Ms. Anna Simó (ERC), Mr. Lluís Corominas (CiU), Mr. Josep Rull (CiU) and Mr. David Companyon (ICV)

Catalonia is not a modern artifice. We show this in two videos in which the members of the Presiding Committee explain the origins of the Parliament of Catalonia, which lie in the 11th century. The resulting subtitled videos feature the members of the Committee explaining the history of the institution in English and French.

The second part consists of visits to Parliament and the MPs by members of the international press and civil society. We are therefore addressing you to invite you to contact Help Catalonia to arrange visits if your are interested.

BBC report: Will Catalonia say goodbye to Spain?

The prestigious British Broadcasting Corporation just released a report about Catalonia's push for independence, titled Will Catalonia say adios to Spain? Adios is the spanish word for goodbye, the Catalan word being adéu. BBC explains that there is “a serious bout of seccessionist fever,” in Catalonia, and it includes a few interviews. A very important part of the report explains the threats by some Spanish military, like Colonel Alamán—as Help Catalonia strongly dennounced recently. We are glad that news media abroad are finally noticing the ways in which the Spanish government is threating Catalonia‘s peaceful and democratic aspirations. Catalan online media outlet Vilaweb took care of subtitling the report in Catalan.

Guardiola talking about Catalonia, his Country.

Pep Guardiola, coach of FC Barcelona, usually speaks in Catalan, and refers to Catalonia as his country. Here, in this video there are several examples of this.

The problem is that although Spain does not consider Catalans as Spaniards (next sports post), they won't let us be Catalan either, and the only option left to us is to defend our country as individuals. Pep Guardiola does just that.

In the video we can see Gerard Piqué, FC Barcelona’s player, speaking of Catalonia as a country too.

"La Crida del segle XXI" registered entity (number 21.511) in the register's associations of the Government of Catalonia.

1st) Denounces to UEFA "the rude and unpleasant uncivil behaviour" of the public at the Vicente Calderon stadium, the match was played in Madrid on the 16th of October between Spain and France, there was a strong whistling from the public when the French anthem was played along with xenophobic insults.

2nd) This incident has also received criticism from TV1 commentators and other print medias in Madrid.

3rd) This is not the first time that an unpleasant event like this has happened in games played in the Spanish house, the public usually shows very little respect for the symbols of the visiting team.

4th) We consider that it is necessary to put a formal complaint to UEFA TV1, we are also providing a video and a report from "El Economista.es". We hope that UEFA enforces a disciplinary action as it is proven to be necessary.

Video: Message to International Community from Catalan President Artur Mas

Artur Mas, President of Catalonia
Mr Mas said Scotland's rejection of independence was "not a setback" and that having the chance to vote was "the key point".
"This is a powerful and strong message that the UK is sending to the entire world - that if there is such a conflict elsewhere in the world you have the right way to try to resolve these differences," he said.
Scotland "has shown the way to others - the Catalan process continues", he added.
"My main commitment is to... organise the referendum and let the Catalan people vote," Mr Mas said.
"If they think in Madrid that by using legal frameworks they can stop the will of the Catalan people, they are wrong."

Catalan Flag Burned on Live TV

To burn a Spanish flag can earn the perpetrator five years in prison in Spain. But to burn a Catalan one is not only not illegal, but can even be broadcasted live. A Spanish digital outlet recently broadcasted an interview where a man burned a Catalan flag saying: “Its best destiny is to be purified by fire.” The TV director commented that it was “a brave action.”

Although usually we'd tend to ignore such provocations, we think the international public should get a glimpse of the kinds of threats, insults, and denigratory treatment Catalans get from some sectors of Spanish society on a daily basis.

Stop the Drain!

The Stop Espoli website published a few days ago a video where some renowned Catalan economists and academics explain very clearly the unjust economic situation Catalonia is subjected to. Among them there is Catalonia's current Minister of Economy, Professor Andreu Mas-Collell, probably the best known Catalan economist in the world. The video received more than 80,000 visits in just 10 days. Discover the consequences of the Spanish fiscal drainage on Catalonia, and what Catalans could do with that money. Let’s stop the fiscal drain.

You can also download a new app for Apple and Android that explains the Catalan fiscal drain. This app is called StopEspoli, and in it you can find:

-A detailed explanation accompanied by data showing the magnitude of the fiscal drain of Catalonia, along with commentaries by internationally renowned Catalan economists.
- A converter that shows how this money could instead be spent to help Catalonia's progress.
- A links section containing news and documents, which allows you to have all of the latest information right at your fingertips.
 - A debt counter, which shows you how much money Catalans are losing with every passing second.

Stop the fiscal drain and spread the word!
