Mr. Joaquin Almunia (PSOE), vice President of the European Commission, recently said that it isn’t honest to say that a future Catalan state would be excluded from the European Union. All people living in the EU are European citizens. So, they have the same rights as citizens. Mr. Almunia had stated previously that Catalonia would be excluded just two weeks ago, so his new remarks are a sign that things are changing fast concerning Catalonia's case at the European Commission.
Almunia also stated that the United Kingdom has given an example of democracy to the Spanish government for the agreement reached between Alex Salmond and David Cameron to hold a binding referendum. The agreement established that the referendum about Scottish independence will be held in 2014.
These statements are contrary to the reasons that PP and PSOE have used against independence. Both claim that an independent Catalonia would remain outside the European Union.
