Spanish General Threatens Catalan President Mas on TV

General Manuel Fernández-Monzón de Altolaguirre, former spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, took part last Saturday in the program El gran debate (The Great Debate) held on Tele 5. His words regarding Catalonia and the pro-independence movement flooded soon into the web.  “September 11th caught us all unaware, even the intelligence services," stated Monzón. He complained forcefully about the alleged negligence of the CNI (National Center of Intelligence), although he said a military intervention in Catalonia wouldn't be necessary.
After stating that “the referendum about independence of Catalonia is illegal,” he recalled what happened to President Lluís Companys, in reference to his assassination by the fascist Spanish regime. “Someone should speak out clearly. There used to be a very brave Catalan, President Lluís Companys (democratically elected President of Catalonia), who dared to proclaim the Republic, and he ended as the Constitution at the time reflected (i.e. executed).” “Should Artur Mas dare to do something contrary to the Spanish Constitution, he would have to face the consequences,” he said.
