Lou Reed wearing a "barretina" (the traditional Catalan cap)

Last  Sunday December 16, musician Lou Reed, founder of the psychedelic rock band The Velvet Underground, uploaded a drawing to his Facebook wall where he appears wearing a "barretina" (the traditional Catalan cap) with a background that seems to represent the mountains of Montserrat. Reed accompanied the image with the line "jingle all the way" (from Jingle Bells), along with a song of his: "The Bells". The picture has been shared by hundreds of users on Facebook and Twitter.

Men wore baretinas in both Catalonia and on the Balearic island of Ibiza until the 19th century, specially in rural areas. It is in the form of a bag, made of wool, usually red, or sometimes purple.

Singer Lou Reed recited verses by Catalan poets in Barcelona in 2008, during the Kosmopolis festival in a hall in the Contemporary Culture Center of Barcelona (CCCB), packed full by a keen audience. Reed's wife Laurie Anderson also participated via video from the United States as she couldn't attend personally because she was closely involved in Barack Obama's election campaign.
