The Catalan MP
Ramon Tremosa has asked for protection to The European Council in order to have
the Franco’s Foundation dissolved. Coinciding with the 37th
Anniversary of the Spanish dictator´s death, he has written the European
Council asking them to “bury this dreadful organization, unthinkable in any
civilized European country”. Can you even think about a Benito Mussolini’s
Foundation or an Adolf Hitler’s Foundation intended for exalting its figures in
Italy or in Germany?, Tremosa has pointed out.
In a parliamentary
question, Catalan MP has also asked the European Council if this Francisco
Franco’s organisation is breaching the European law related with “the incitement
to hate as well as exalting crimes through the figure of Francisco Franco”. European MP Ramon Tremosa points out in his writing to
the European Council that this institution (the
Europen Council) promotes its Member States “to have an appropriate legislation
in order to criminally pursue the actions trying to incite people to hate,
racism and xenophobia” as it appears in its decision 2008/913/JAI on November
20th 2008, which must be carried out by all Member States. Tremosa
assures that Francoism “had a special obsession against Catalonia and its
people”; which meant the murder, the persecution and the torture of thousands
of people “just for being Catalan or even worse for using the Catalan
language”.
In
this sense, he also reminds that Francisco Franco’s Foundation “still exists in
Spain”. Much more, this Fundation has demanded the Spanish government to
declare the State of War against Catalonia, as you can read on its leading
article on October’s edition. Tremosa points out that the main goal of
Francisco Franco’s Foundation is “to glorify the memory of the dead dictator”,
so he wonders whether this breaches article 1 of the European Council’s
decision (referred to “hate and exaltation of war crimes”) and whether the
State should use articles 5 and 6 of the above mentioned decision in order to
carry out criminal sanctions, and moreover dissolve this Foundation through the
courts for exalting crimes against humanity.
Tremosa
has regretted the fact that “Franco persecuted, tortured, put in prison and
murdered thousands of Catalans. Many more suffered his systematic and violent
persecution just for defending the Catalan Culture”. Furthermore, he added that
“today is the 37thAnniversary of his death “any kind of exaltation
for this monster should be pursued with the full weight of the law.
Apologies for posting in English, as I don't speak Catalan. I would like to applaud Ramon Tremosa's action and hope he is successful in the call to have this appalling Foundation dissolved. It tells us everything we need to know about Franco that he unapologetically kept a signed picture of Adolf Hitler on his desk.
Thankfully supporters of Scottish independence do not face the same kind of threats and intimidation as our Catalan cousins, but we are all striving for the same ideal!

Please, Do not apologize. It's a pleasure to hearing from you. We post in English only (having French, Spanish and German editions too) in Help Catalonia. Your words encourage us.
