Spanish Bar Association Candidate Denies Ties with Catalonia

One of the candidates to lead Madrid's Bar Association, Sonia Gumpert (with a Catalan-sounding last name), publicly denied any connection with Catalonia in order to avoid being damaged in the electoral process. The lawyer issued a statement to clear the rumors connecting her with Catalonia. Furthermore, she strongly stated that none of the members in her team are Catalan and all the institutions supporting her candidacy are from Madrid.
“Considering the possible victory of the candidate Sonia Gumpert, moreover knowing that her program is not even questionable, the product of her work through many years, some circles in power as well as other candidates have selfishly spread a false rumor. This rumor tries to connect the candidate Sonia Gumpert with Catalonia, taking advantage of the current situation in this region,” the statement says.
“We do feel obliged, for the very first time, not to talk about our program, but to clarify that although we do not have anything against the Catalan people, none of our fourteen members are Catalan, and what's more, all the institutions supporting our candidate are from Madrid,” the statement adds.
The lawyer states that we need to understand those Spaniards living in Catalonia who feel deeply Spanish and do not support secession. “They deserve the respect as well as a warm welcome from those who feel Spanish too. Being Spanish Catalan is not a bad thing at all," she concludes.
