Avaaz stops its campaign against the 'Statute of Autonomy'

Avaaz has recently withdrawn a petition that it had initiated via signature gathering in order to cancel theStatute of Autonomy of Catalonia. Avaaz is an organization defined as "a global online movement that gives people the means to have the decision making power around the world" and allow "united affiliates of other nations to close the gap between the world we currently have and what the majority actually wants".

The Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia is the law regulating those sociopolitical affairs of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia within Spain. The law was decreed in the Catalan Parliament, ratified by the Spanish Parliament after the majority of Catalan people had voted through a referendum with a 75% result in favor. This Statute was finally -unjustly- modified by the Spanish Constitutional Court, confirming through its action the law's validity within the country.

The process experienced by the Catalan people to achieve this significant law and to have it accordingly and democratically approved, has been long, tough and painful. From the first draft (which was the result of the majority of the Catalan parliamentary groups) to the final sentence issued by the Constitutional Court in 2010 -which was previously ratified in 2006 by the Spanish Parliament and also supported by a ballot of the citizens-, there is a massive gap in contents and forms.

The Constitutional Court' s decision would open a collective wound that would relentlessly lead into the current political conflict developed nowadays between Catalonia and the central Spanish Government. However, the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia is still valid today and that validation process followed is proof that it went through all possible filters.

To the surprise all of the Spanish nationalists, Avaaz has now withdrawn the collection of signatures process against this democratic and ratified law. The immediate protests from Help Catalonia and claims made by other individuals have prompted Avaaz to take this measure.
Spanish nationalists are often badly accustomed to impunity when attacking people, threatening them, steal flags or insult on the social networks ... etc. Now this last event only shows that this impunity is no longer obtainable at an international level. This is now over and we won't allow them pass and antagonise us by any means in the future.
