Spanish Unionism is reacting badly to the motions supporting the Declaration of Sovereignty being approved in dozens of town halls in Catalonia. On January 29th, Igualada City Council approved its support for the declaration by 18 to 3 against: the conservative Catalan government party (CiU), the pro-independence Republican Left (ERC), the left-wing Initiative for Catalonia-Greens (ICV) and the Catalan Socialists (PSC) voted in favour, while the Spanish government Popular Party and the far-right racist PxC opposed it.
The following day the City Hall and the offices of the Department of Culture, Education and Social Services were defaced with graffiti, including the Spanish flag, the Celtic cross, and phrases like Viva España, "Catalonia is Spain" and "Always unionists", and even the Spanish and Catalan flags together, a symbol used extensively at the unionist demonstration last October 12th at Plaça Catalunya (Catalonia Square) in Barcelona.
In addition to the graffiti at the City Hall, graffiti have also appeared on the façade of the Basilica of Santa Maria next door. The municipal services erased all of them early in the morning.
In several cases, the graffiti are signed DNJ, corresponding to the extreme right-wing Democracia Nacional.
