On the 6th of June, a Spanish unionist councillor cheered the murder of Guillem Agulló, a Catalan pro-independence activist perpetrated 20 years ago. Juan Montero, councillor of the far-right Plataforma per Catalunya (PxC) party, wrote on Twitter some nasty words such as “that son of a bitch Guillem Agulló is now in the best place for him to be.” Twitter, which is not submitted to Spanish authorities, soon shut down Montero’s account. A few months ago, together with ruling Spanish government Partido Popular and the unionist Ciudadanos party, PxC took part in a demonstration in Barcelona against Catalan independence since they all stand for Spain’s unity.
Agulló was a young pro-independence antifascist activist murdered in Valencia in 1993 by a squad of Spanish fascists youths. The whole terrorist group were acquitted of murder, except for Pedro Cuevas, who actually carried out the stabbing, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. His fate depended on the Spanish authorities, and he was set free just after 4 years in jail. Cuevas was arrested again in 2005 when the police was investigating a neonazi group from which they took knives and daggers, knuckledusters, studded wristbands and swastika flags. Among the 17 arrested were two Spanish soldiers. Nevertheless, the murderer was allowed to run on the fascist Alianza Nacional party ticket at the 2007 local council elections.
