First Firm Steps in Catalonia Against Spain's Wert Education Bill

A broad panoply of Catalan parties, from conservative Christian-democrat UDC and liberal CDC, through centre-left ERC and PSC, across to left-wing ICV and CUP, have come together and joined forces along with the MUCE Unified Movement for the Education Community, which includes Parent-Teacher-Student Associations and Teachers' Unions, to make common cause in Parliament calling for the withdrawal of the Wert bill, named after Spanish minister for Education, José Ignacio Wert.

After the meeting this morning, CiU, ERC, PSC, ICV joined CUP in Parliament to present a draft resolution to call for the withdrawal the so-called Spanish Basic Law for the Improvement of Education Quality, or LOMCE, drafted by Minister Wert.

Once the text has been agreed upon and approved and supported by MUCE, it will be submitted before the Spanish state institutions. The political groups will also meet on Friday afternoon to begin "work and coordinate" the submission of joint amendments to the LOMCE in the Spanish Congress.
