Catalan is spoken in the Sardinian city of Alghero (Italian Republic). According to the latest studies the Algherese (as this variant is known) is spoken by a quarter of the population. A majority of people in Alghero can trace their roots back to Barcelona or Tarragona, and call their city “Barceloneta”. The ties between the Sardinian city and Catalonia were broken as a result of the occupation in 1714.
It was thanks to a Sardinian archivist who took part in the Floral Games, a contest of poetry in Catalan, that in 1864 this community was rediscovered. From 1902 the first entities for the defense of the Catalan culture were created, and in 1960 the so-called “Cruise of the Reunion” was organized. The ship sailed from Barcelona with 139 Catalan intellectuals who re-established relations with Alguer. Thousands of people received them at the port on a memorable day.
Algherese has been losing ground to Italian, but it is still the most spoken language. The Town Council, with the support of the Generality of Catalonia, recently presented the first official campaign designed to promote its use. The presentation was attended by the Mayor of Alghero, the delegate of the Government in the city, and the Advisor for the Community and the Identity of the Town of Alghero. With the motto “In Alguerese, it’s more tasty” much material has been published, such as a girl kissing her father or a couple expecting a child. In this way Catalans defend their language, with love. In the North of Catalonia, for example, the last action in favor of Catalan was a meeting to give kisses. Also, for Saint George’s Day books in Catalan are given together with a rose.
