This is the first publication handling the
fundamental role of Catalan at welcome receptions in the Catalan sports world
and which offers the necessary tools to make language integration possible.
This booklet has the support of sport journalists
such as Joaquim Maria Puyal, Antoni Bassas and Enric López Vilalta and includes
stories of former players such as Andrey Xepkin, Gaby Cairo, or Eusebio
Sacristán.
Barcelona, 18 march 2013. The FC Barcelona
Foundation and the Pro-Language Platform present 'With Catalan: Shoot and
goaaal!' The main objective of this booklet is to highlight the fundamental
role of the Catalan language at the welcome reception in the Catalan sports
world, thereby using anecdotic or personal stories of different personalities
in the sports world.
A pioneering project
This guide is innovative and pioneering, as it is
the first publication dealing with the importance of the Catalan language and
its development in and through the sports world. As such, the guide gives an
overview of a series of contents which are already being used in the projects
developed by the FC Barcelona Foundation in Catalonia and in Catalan language
workshops realised by the Pro-Language Platform. The objective of all these
initiatives is to improve integration and social cohesion through the promotion
of the Catalan language.
'With Catalan: Shoot and goaaal!' appeals to three different actors playing an important role in the
sportive welcome reception and in the promotion of the Catalan language: the
educators and trainers, the end users and other recipients, and their families.
It gives them a varying set of tools and methods to develop the use of Catalan
amongst youngsters starting practice in any sports discipline. It also includes
a handy section of sportive resources, on social inclusion and on the very
Catalan language.
With testimonials from sportsmen and journalists
What makes the difference and attractiveness of
this booklet is the involvement of different famous sport personalities from
two sides. On the one hand we have well-known sportsmen who went through the
process of adopting the Catalan language as they came to practice their sport
discipline in Catalonia. On the other hand we have journalists writing and
reporting on sport. The sportsmen, all former Barça players, are: Andrey
Xepkin, player of the handball A-team between 1993 and 2005; Gaby Cairo, former
trainer of the roller hockey A-team and player between 1993 and 2004; and
Eusebio Sacristán, present trainer of the Barça football B-team and former technic
and player of the A-team between 1988 and 1995. All of these tell us their
story on how they came to adopt Catalan as a language.
The journalists telling us their first hand
stories on how they experienced language issues and sport are Joaquim Maria
Puyal, Antoni Bassas and Enric López Vilalta.
Widespread distribution of the guide
The booklet guide will be distributed through
sport federations and sport schools and aims to reach educators and trainers as
well as sportsmen and people closely linked to sport, but also their families,
thereby aiming to focus on sport values as well as on social opportunities
given by the knowledge of Catalan. At present, the guide is already being used
by educators and other professionals in the FutbolNet project of the FC
Barcelona Foundation, as support material to work on the welcome reception of
new sportsmen arriving at la Masia, the Barça youth academy.
This publication is the joint work of the
Pro-Language Platform and the FC Barcelona Foundation, two entities working
together to support the role of the Catalan language as a unifying instrument
in the international sport context of FC Barcelona and as a tool to promote
social integration and cohesion.
