At precisely 17:14 hours, in remembrance of the year Catalonia lost its freedom at the end of the War of Spanish Succession, church bells rang out calling the Catalan people to join hands in a show of will for democracy, demanding a referendum on the independence of Catalonia. According to official figures, over 1.5 million people, 600.000 just in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, joined together to form a continuous, 400-kilometre (250 mile) line from beyond the French border in the north, down to the region of Valencia.
The enormous organisational and logistic effort by the Catalan National Assembly, a non-governmental volunteer organisation, has shown an unparalleled result. There were so many participants that in some cases the human chain was three and even four lines deep. A huge success of a singular demonstration of a peaceful, democratic wish of the Catalan people to exercise their right to vote on the future of their nation, whether to remain in Spain or to establish Catalonia as an independent state.
