This morning, floral offerings were made at the monument to Rafael Casanova, the last Conseller en Cap, the leading figure of the Consell de Cent, Barcelona's government when the city fell to the Spanish and French armies at the end of the War of Succesion in 1714. Every year, on September 11, associations and political parties (excepting Spanish unionists) pay hommage to all the patriots fallen in the struggle for the freedom of Catalonia 300 years ago.
During the morning, the different groups participation patiently wait to lay the wreaths at the foot of the statue and sing the Catalan national anthem - Els Segadors.
In Sant Boi, a town near Barcelona, a floral offering is also made at the tomb of Rafael Casanova.
