Setember 11th is a date of remembrance that once we were a nation it was worth it to die for. Our heroes in 1714 were average people who proudly and bravely fought for their homeland and the Liberties they had inherited from previous generations. They fought, they died and they were defeated and repressed afterwards to limits beyond belief. Many of them were forced to tear down their own homes, a total of one third of Barcelona urban area at the time, to leave room to build a fortress (Ciutadella) to control the whole city.
Nonetheless, it was not in vain. Their ultimate sacrifice allowed the flame of our Nation being passed on even in the darkest times hitherto. Three hundred years afterwards, we are witnessing the awakening of an ancient and legendary nation that wants to be back to the world scenario.
If we want to honour what our National Day means,we should push the process to independence and stand for our country when it’s most needed.
