Real GDP growth
Catalonia, like most European countries, experienced a harsh recession
after the burst of the housing bubble in 2008.
With no time for recovery, the debt crisis is pushing the Catalan economy back into recession.

Unemployment rate
The unemployment rate in Catalonia was stable around the
European average until the recession.
Today, unemployment is at its historic peak and has become the main concern, both economically and socially.

Exports to foreign countries (M€)
Catalonia: an export-oriented economy.
The Catalan economy has turned to the foreign market to
make-up for a depressed local market.
As a result of a major effort in competitiveness, exports to
foreign countries have increased 41% during the recession years reaching a
historical peak of 58,321M€ in 2012.

average and close to the median, next to Germany.
Historically, Catalonia’s main trading partner has been
Spain, even though the share of sales to the Spanish market is shrinking (from
52,3% in 2007 to 45,7% in 2012) and the share of sales to the rest of the World
is increasing (from 48,3% in 2007 to 54,3% in 2012).
