Petition to Amnesty International Spain: reconsider and rectify the veto of the ceremony that was to be held in Barcelona as a part of the 1714 tricentennial celebrations.
Whom do we ask?
Amnesty International (Spanish Section) ; info@es.amnesty.org
What
do we want them to do?
We ask
Amnesty International Spain to be coherent with the ideals they defend, not to
discriminate on the basis of nationalist criteria and not to veto the award ceremony
that was to be held in Barcelona.
Why is
this important?
The
Spanish delegation of Amnesty International (AI) has vetoed the
"Ambassador of Conscience" award ceremony set to take place in
Barcelona (despite the fact the capital of Catalonia was proposed by AI Spain
itself), alleging that “we do
not celebrate acts with political institutions”.
According to Toni Soler, a Catalan journalist and a member of AI, this conflicts with the fact that the mayor of Berlin presided a recent event
celebrated by AI in his city.
We ask
AI Spain not to discriminate based on nationalist criteria, nor to veto the
award ceremony and to reconsider the decision taken. The 1714 Tricentennial
celebrations commemorate the struggle of the people against an absolutist regime
that seized their rights from them (still in effect today); Therefore, the
decision of AI Spain is contradictory to the ideals they aim to defend.
Typcial, contradictory and unsurprising.
