**ALFONSO USSÍA, a columnist for the newspaper La Razón
threatened Catalan President Artur Mas that the Spanish government may
send the guardia civil to arrest him for sedition. Ussía recalls the
case of President Lluís Companys, who was arrested by the Nazis in
France, handed over to Franco, and executed in 1940.
**ATENEA,
the most influential lobby of Spain’s defense and security industry,
warned about the need to stop the process of self-determination in
Catalonia. Atenea has links with other ultraconservative think-tanks,
such as the San Pablo Ceu foundation, which has been promoting the
declaration Recover Spain which shares many points with the Serbian
Memorandum of 1986.
**JUAN
VELARDE, economist and winner of the Economy Prince of Asturias Award,
opposed to Catalonia's self-determination, made reference during an
interview to the 1842 bombing of Barcelona by general Espartero. Mr.
Velarde quoted a sentence infamously attributed to general Espartero,
“We need to bomb Barcelona every 50 years,” and insinuated that it might
be necessary to do so again.
