Jože Pučnik, in memoriam

Jože Pučnik died eleven years ago today in Germany. He is buried in his home village of Črešnjevec (Slovenia).

Pučnik is considered to be one of the fathers of independent Slovenia. The other, France Bučar, is still alive. In fact, Slovenia independence is very close in time.
The European Union recognised Slovenia in January 1992, and the UN accepted it as a member in May 1992. Slovenia joined the European Union and NATO on the 1st of May 2004. All thanks to men and women like Pučnik.
As a sociologist and politician (he led the Social Democratic Union of Slovenia), he was one of the most outspoken Slovenian critics of dictatorship and lack of civil liberties in Tito's Yugoslavia. He was arrested and sentenced to 9 years in jail.

His imprisonment lasted seven years and was seen as an example by many young people, thus becoming an idol.

Pučnik emigrated to Hamburg (Germany) where he worked at the university and closely with German Social Democrats. He returned to Slovenia in 1989 leading both the Social Democratic Union of Slovenia and the Democratic Opposition of Slovenia (DEMOS) platform, and elected an MP of the Slovenian Parliament on a pro-independence ticket. He finally became vice-president of the Slovenian government.

On 23 December 1990, in a democratic referendum such as that the Catalans are asking for, over 88% of the electorate voted for a sovereign and independent Slovenia. On 25 June 1991, Slovenia became independent.

On the morning of 27 June, Ten-Day War broke out, with the mainly Serbian Yugoslav army using military force to attempt to stop Slovenian independence. This immediately led to a strong reaction from local Slovenians, who organized spontaneous barricades and demonstrations against the army. The Slovenian government had already put into action its plan to seize control of the republic's border posts and sixty-three people died in this war.

After 1996, he retired from active politics with honorary tasks. His funeral was attended by a huge crowd. The Slovenian think thank

Jože Pučnik Institute and the main international airport in Slovenia named after him. His son Gorazd is the director of the Srečko Kosovel Boarding School in Trieste.

Mark our words; we shall follow in Pučnik's steps.
