The New York Times blesses legitimacy of Catalan referendum

US newspaper The New York Times has made it clear in its editorial published on March 11th that the complex situation in Crimea is unquestionably unlike Quebec, Scotland and Catalonia, which are legitimate to pursue their independence through a self-determination referendum.

The NYT, one of the most influential newspapers in the US, places the Catalan self-determination process at the same level asthe Scottish and Quebecois processes, which are broadly and internationally recognized. The position taken by the NYT is totally opposed to the line of action taken by the Spanish government.

Referring to Sunday's referendum in the Crimea, the NYT considers this process as a phony referendum and claims the US and the European Union must impose serious penalties on Russia.
