Poll shows Catalonia independence lacking majority

MADRID (AP) — A Catalonian regional government opinion poll says less than a majority would favor independence from Spain.

Results released Wednesday said 47.1 percent would vote in favor of breaking away from Spain. The regional government wants to hold a referendum on Nov. 9, but the Spanish government won't allow it.

The Catalonian government wants to ask voters if they want Catalonia to be a state and, if so, should it be independent.

The Opinion Studies Center poll showed 57.6 percent would vote yes to the first question and 81.8 percent of these would vote yes to the second question, making for an overall 47.1 percent in favor.

The survey of 2,000 people had a margin of error of 2.7 percent.
