Catalonia staged its age old tradition of a human tower competition at the weekend – it is held every two years but this time the gathering took on a more political slant.
After Spain’s constitutional court issued an injunction preventing the Catalan government from holding an independence referendum local leaders used the colourful event to keep the momentum going for the vote.
According to Catalonia’s president the real problem of whether the region can hold the referendum is not whether the vote is legal it’s a question of political will. Artur Mas claims Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy mistakenly believes that most people don’t want to hold a vote.
However the day before the tower competition, roughly 800 Catalan mayors joined the region’s president in showing their support for the poll.
