The Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent (ERC, Esquerra) announced on Tuesday morning that he was delaying the confidence debate to reappoint Carles Puigdemont First Minister of Catalonia. On January 29th PP Spokesperson Pablo Casado, in a clear mafia style, was  threatening the Speaker of the Parliament "He has two children, he knows what might happen if he allows President Puigdemont to be sworn". Spanish court also was threatening Mr Torrent if he allowed Puigdemont to be democratically elected.

The debate had been scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Mr. Torrent did not cancel the debate, though, and said Mr. Puigdemont was still the candidate: "We will not accept them telling Catalan men and women that they have voted badly, after they voted for what they wanted", he said, adding that the candidacy of Mr. Puigdemont was "the will expressed by a majority of this chamber".
Mr. Torrent said he had now "personally committed to guaranteeing his immunity" after the former First Minister petitioned the Speaker for such protection on Monday.

The Speaker has instructed the regional chamber's legal services to prepare arguments to defend Mr. Puigdemont. "I have a duty to protect the sovereignty of this parliament from anti-democratic intromissions and attacks", he said, adding that elected members would choose the new First Minister, "not someone in an office 600km away".

President Puigdemont, in a late night message said that "If we stand together, strong, dignified, democratic and peaceful, we will move towards the fulfillment of our liberty. Unity is what brought us here. Let’s not lose it. This is what those who want us in prison and in the exile dream about.”
