Torches march in Catalonia started during The War of the Spanish
Succession (1701–1714) triggered by the death of the childless Charles
II. Catalans followed back Austrian Habsburg, who respected the Catalan Free State, against
French Bourbon, who proposed to supress the Catalan Free State. Castile used the war to occupy Catalonia as well as Aragon, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The Catalan Constitution was suppressed as well as the Catalan Parliament and Catalonia was occupied by Spain by a disastrous "New State Decrees". These new laws destroyed the Catalan State and banned the language too. It was the end of Catalan Independence and the occupation by military means.
Three hundred years ago all the violence, Fascist Dictatorships, hanged people (the Barca's President and the Catalan democratic President hanged by Spanish military), bannings,... have been unsuccessfully. Catalan will for freedom is not only intact but growing. Most of Catalans have lost the fear in spite of having members of their families killed, fined or exiled by Spain. Yesterday, in a hundred of Catalan cities and villages dozens of thousands marched in the same way as their ancestors in the War of Succession. In special 2,200 marched to the Lledoners jail where Catalan social activists and members of the Democratic Government are held as ostages by the Spanish inquisition. In Lleida or Tàrrega thousands marched in a never seen huge demonstration and in Barcelona dozend of thousands payed respect to the Fossar de les Moreres (Grave of the Mulberries) where Catalans killed by the Spanish army in the 1713-1714 siege are buried.
The night march to Lledoners Gaol, in the middle of the forest, was spectacular
