Belgian Flemish Parliament President, Jan Peumans, sent a letter to jailed Catalan Parliament speaker Carme Forcadell questioning democracy in Spain. In his letter, Peumans, a separatist in the Flemish Region of Belgium, described police violence during a banned independence referendum on 1 October 2017 in Catalonia as an “outrageous expression of an undemocratic policy.”
“Keeping (Catalan) politicians under arrest for months is an even more insidious act, a proof that the central government in Spain is not able to meet the conditions to be part of a modern democratic European Union,” he added. In his letter, the Flemish politician called the actions of Madrid in connection with the Catalan referendum on independence "anti-democratic violence." He also said that "the central government of Spain does not fulfill the conditions for membership in the European Union."
The letter was handed to the former speaker of Catalonia’s parliament, Carme Forcadell, on 7 September when 13 MEPs visited jailed separatist leaders. In Radio Belgium the Speaker of Flemish Parliament Jan Peumans insisted: “I stand by what I said: Spanish authorities injured 800 Catalan voters and still keep political prisoners. This is unworthy of a democratic constitutional state.
