Spanish electoral board bans Catalan President Puigdemont and advisers from running in European elections

The Spanish board of elections has decided to ban Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and his former advisers Antoni Comín and Clara Ponsatí from running in the European elections.

Today's decision was made based on appeals filed by the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the centre-right political party Ciudadanos against Puigdemont. Yesterday Ciudadanos only keep its 5 MPs elected in Catalonia to the Spanish Parliament and the PP lost 5 out of 6. Puigdemont and his former advisers will be able to appeal the decision only 48 hours after the official list has been published. The Catalan independentist party Together for Catalonia condemned the board's decision:

"They want to silence and set aside our candidacy because what it represents: the determination to defend the mandate of the #1Oct and the decision of millions of Catalans to form a Republic cannot be explained in the heart of the European institutions.

We will not let go of defending our rights until the end, to keep putting them at the service of the cause of self-determination in Catalonia. We are convinced that the manoeuvres of certain bodies of Spanish justice will again be de-authorised."

Mr Puigdemont said : "We just received at 6.42pm the reasons for the Spanish Central Election Board to exclude us from the European election list. Term to appeal ends at 8pm today. This confirms the legal scandal and the coup to democracy in the background and the form.
