Barcelona is experiencing one of the largest demonstrations Europe has ever seen. One and a half million Catalan people are expressing their wish for the independence of their country. Until recently, most Catalans would have doubted whether secession from Spain was the best path, but the political events over the last months have caused a massive shift in Catalan public opinion. Gone is the time of a few thousand demonstrators who wanted better financing for Catalonia from Spain. Now, there are no other flags borne by the people attending than the Estelada, the “Starred” Catalan flag representing the wish for a sovereign state.
