Last Sunday, the Assistant Bishop of Barcelona, the Most Reverend Sebastià Taltavull affirmed that the Catholic Church of Catalonia will support Catalan independence, as long as the process of self-determination is democratic and peaceful. In an interview with the Catalan national radio, Taltavull defended the legitimacy of the push for self-determination. “The Church sides with the people, and if the people democratically reach such a consensus, we will be at their service.”
Taltavull, also a member of the Spanish Conference of Catholic Bishops, assured that the Catalan bishops unequivocally support the right to self-determination.
He was speaking in reference to a letter of the Tarragonan Conference of Catholic Bishops, the highest authority of the Catholic Church in Catalonia, that expressed support for people's rights, and written in response to the Spanish Conference of Bishops that had defended the unity of Spain.
