Extremadura has created a 3.9M€ plan aimed at helping the population to pay for their studies. This means that 4,000 young people in Extremadura, between 18 and 25 years old, will be granted 1,000€ to complete elementary school. This is not the first time that this kind of plan has been implemented in Spain. Andalusia developed what is called a “6000 Scholarship,” with monthly payments up to 645€.
Extremadura receives 24% of all scholarships in Spain, and Andalusia 21%. Shockingly, Catalonia only gets a 9% of all scholarships, when its population is 16% of all Spain.
All these figures match extraordinary comparative data: while Extremadura receives $1.6 billion from the European aid funds, Catalonia receives just $679 million. Also the ratio of computers per student in Extremadura is 1 to 2, while in Catalonia it is 1 to 6. All this extra investment should translate into a significant improvement, however it doesn’t look like it has been achieved: in Extremadura 23% of its population work for the government, while in Catalonia only a 9% does.
Government support might have a positive impact, however we should ask ourselves:
1) How come Extremadura is receiving extraordinary aid from the Spanish and European Cohesion Fund?.
2) How come young people from Extemadura can be granted 1,000€ to study...and the rest of European students don’t get it?.
In a nutshell: Can they afford this, taking into account that they do not do it with their own money, but with Catalan and European’s money?
