The Catalans democratically voted a declaration of sovereignty.
Today, Spain has declared void the will of the Catalan people.
An unprecedented event in democracy

Declaration of sovereignty - “Man cannot be, if not free”

This Wednesday, the Catalan Parliament is to approve a Declaration of Sovereignty that should build the foundations for the Catalan people's will to decide their own future without limitations. There is universal agreement among the real democracies throughout the world, by which a basic principle is the fact that democracy per se has no limit in its approach, as long as it is approved by a majority. It is debatable, depending on the subject, whether the majority is to be simple or qualified. But the Catalan Parliament intends to approve a declaration of intent, significant, but no further than that. It does certainly propound the greatest essence of democracy...read more

We want to Vote

A simple but hugely important event will take place in Barcelona this Wednesday, 23 January 2013: the Catalan Parliament will vote and most likely adopt a Declaration of Sovereignty. This declaration will solemnly proclaim that the people of Catalonia is a sovereign political and juridical subject, and will thus set the legal basis for the start of the self-determination process of Catalonia.

A majority of almost two thirds of the Catalan Parliament –a large majority by any standard– will vote in favour of this Declaration, which establishes the right of the Catalans to decide on their political future on the basis of five principles: transparency, dialogue, social cohesion, Europeanism, and international legality. In this clear, simple, and transparent manner...read more

Declaration of Sovereignty in the Catalan Parliament

The agreement between CiU and ERC (the parties in the Catalan government and opposition, respectively) has permitted the start of the new term, the tenth Parliament, that will be completely different from the previous terms. The 135 representatives in the Catalan Parliament will have to face the term of freedom, so to speak. First of all because, no matter what the Spanish and Catalan conservative media say, the parties in favour of the right to self-determination won the elections held on 25th of November. If in 1980, when the Catalan autonomy was devolved, the predominant axis was the right/left, in 2012 the prevailing axis, despite the irrefutable economic and financial crisis that's sinking the country... read more

A very simple step

A very simple step will be taken by Catalan Parliament tomorrow. With the support of anywhere between 62% and 79% of all MP's, a declaration of sovereignty will be approved. (Note: it must be said that only 21% of MP's will vote against the declaration. 23 of the 135 might abstain from voting due to divergences with technicalities of the declaration.)

The importance of this declaration is enormous. It will recognise the Catalan people as sovereign and will express its ability to choose its collective destiny as a free, sovereign unit. What this declaration does, in effect, is provide the Catalan people with the legal...read more

Why 2013 in Catalonia will be like 1775 in the United States

Catalonia is regaining independence from Spain.  But why break away now, after 299 years? Let’s compare the current Catalan situation to the American colonies just before independence.

According to the BBC, “In 1763, Americans joyously celebrated the British victory in the Seven Years' War, reveling in their identity as Britons and jealously guarding their much-celebrated rights which they believed they possessed by virtue of membership in what they saw as the world's greatest empire.” Yet just 13 years later, the colonies declared independence.  Why? Because Britain attempted to abolish their most-cherished rights... read more

EFA : Catalonia Begins the Process to Become a State

Catalonia sets course to exercise the right to decide, declaring its sovereignty. Catalonia begins the process to become a state.

Last November 25, at the Catalan elections with the greatest ever participation, the most focused on the right to decide, the citizens clearly expressed their support for Catalonia to begin a process ending in the free exercise of the right to self-determination.
The Spanish government's persistent rejection of Catalonia's legitimate demands for self-government, to put a stop to the massive tax plunder Catalonia is subject to, or for respect for Catalan culture and the language, have thwarted the different proposals to reach an understanding made by the Catalan institutions across the board to the Spanish institutions...read more
