The Vice President of the European Parliament and MEP, Alejo Vidal-Quadras
has stated
that Spain
"is going to physically
stop" a democratic referendum
if this is held
in Catalonia. He
has thus forewarned that the
Spanish police "will
remove the
ballot boxes" from the polling stations as he believes that the referendum would be a criminal act.
In response, Catalan MEP Ramon Tremosa has replied saying that the threat of sending the police to remove the ballot boxes
for a democratic referendum
on the independence of
Catalonia "simply does not belong
in the 21st century". He says further that "it is
hardly compatible with what the European democracies
would condone."
