Spain’s Ministry of Justice and the Catalan Democratic Referendum

The Spanish Minister of Justice, Mr. Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, has guaranteed that he will not allow a referendum for the independence of Catalonia to be held. The question and the date for referendum were agreed on yesterday by the so-called Catalan sovereignty parties at a meeting held at the Palau de la Generalitat, the Catalan Government, in Barcelona.

Mr Gallardon was quoted as saying “it is an attempt to misinterpret the Constitution, against the fundamental rights of the Spaniards”.

The referendum “will not take place”, he said, arguing that the Constitution does not allow an autonomous community to hold a referendum questioning Spanish sovereignty, a matter that all Spanish citizens should decide.
