On November 19, former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar urged the application of prison sentences for those who convened a referendum illegally, referring to Catalan President Artur Mas.
In an interview on Spanish radio Onda Cero, he claimed that he would not hesitate to apply the law in Catalonia “with all its consequences” if he were the head of the central government.
This law was approved during his term but was repealed by the socialist PSOE government and has not yet been re-established. According to Mr. Aznar, “it is now clear” that his government was right when “setting limits on those who want to circumvent the law, break up the country, and it is now clear that some of us were right to defend certain positions then”.
The interview, from minutes 28 to 36 (in Spanish).
