Pro Independence Together for Catalonia Wins Most Mayorships

947 Catalonia's local councils were elected yesterday. Most of them will be ruled by pro independence forces. The biggest force is Together for Catalonia with 370 mayors. The second one is Catalonia's Republican Left with 359 Mayors. Both forces are pro indepencence but not the only one. In 2015 ERC had 249 Mayors and JxCat was not formed. Its predecesor, CiU, was formed by both autoomists and sovereignists and had 436 mayors. Several "independent" lists not aligned with any party at local level have a pro independence vision too. Finally there are many minor pro independence parties. The biggest one is the Popular Unity Candidacy with 19 mayors. It had fourteen. A new one, Primàries, had 5 mayorships and 22 local councillors. Altogether the pro independence lists will rule in 753 local councils out of 947 meaning a 80 %.

Pro independence lists won the last local elections with 1,607,880 votes growing from 1,450,865 in 2015. In those elections they won 6,249 local councillors out of 9,054. In Barcelona ERC won the elections but an extraordinary alliance of Spanish left and right gave the local council to the first ones in spite of popular protests. In the other main cities pro independence lists won for first time, since the Franco Fascist uprising, in Lleida and Tarragona. In Girona Together for Catalonia won again and Marta Madrenas will be the Mayoress. The Spanish radical parties, PP, C'anos and Vox will have only one local council out of 947. In 2015 the had 466,621 votes with 392 local councillors but they decreased in May 26th elections to 354,312 and 305 local councillors. The Spanish Socialist party, unionist too, lost many Mayorships from 122 in 2015 to 87 in 2019.
